Congenital heart diseases in dogs may be present at birth and develop or change over time. Many congenital defects are thought to be genetically transmitted however the exact mode of inheritance has not been precisely determined for all cardiovascular diseases. Dr. Marco Margiocco, the Cardiology specialist at Canada West Veterinary Specialists, recommends auscultation after 12 months of age to rule out congenital defects.
